The Business of Digital

More than 150 business leaders from across Leeds attended The Business of Digital to hear about the future of digital technology and how it will affect businesses in the city.

The Business of Digital, the fourth in the series of Marketing Leeds’ national thought-leadership debates took place at The Mint, which is in the heart of Leeds’ creative and digital district, Holbeck Urban Village. Presented in association with Leeds Media, The Business of Digital was one of the key events to take place as part of Leeds Digital Festival.

The lively debate featured a panel of international and national experts who provided opinion about future trends, advice on how businesses can bolster their bottom line by harnessing digital and technological advances and encouraged debate to celebrate the thriving digital sector in the city.

The panel featured Chinese entrepreneur, Buddy Ye, the co-founder of WangYou.com, one of the first and largest social networking companies in China and chief innovation officer of Open Knowledge, Dr Norman Lewis, Amanda Brown, first direct’s head of PR.  Kieran Matthews, marketing director of Internet Advertising Bureau and Daniel Pollick, head of IT for Global law firm DLA Piper completed the panel and offered practical advice on how technology and social media can benefit businesses.

Deborah Green, chief executive of Marketing Leeds, said: “It was a privilege to be able to welcome Chinese entrepreneur Buddy Ye to the city, the first time that he’s ever visited Leeds. Buddy provided interesting insight into the digital landscape in China and predicted a big focus on mobile phone technology. The Business of Digital debate was a great success and so lively that it was clear that we were only able to scratch the surface of this important and relevant topic. It provided a great insight into the future of new technology and how our everyday lives will be impacted.”
A number of key themes we’re discussed at the event. Highlighting key trends in the digital sector, Kieron Matthews said that online video had grown 87% year-on-year with Buddy Ye adding that the growth of mobile is the current trend.

Dr Norman Lewis and Daniel Pollick stressed that digital is still at an early stage. “It’s dangerous to pick too many trends because we are at the very beginning of the internet era," said Daniel Pollick."It took 45 years for the internet to become established," Dr Norman Lewis stated.
Amanda Brown, said: "21 years ago when first direct was launched, we told people how to interact with us, now they tell us."
